When one of the founders of the physical immortality group People Unlimited died years ago, a local journalist reached out to me for a statement. Like most journalists, he was not interested in connecting the dots or understanding the underlying psychological dynamics. He wanted sensationalism. Mainstream media feeds on humanity’s final acts, tragedies, and bizarre cult behaviors because exploiting surface spectacle keeps everyone safe from the real root of the issue: childhood repression.
Journalists, intellectuals, and the public would rather obsess over absurd grandiosity or technological salvation than confront the terrifying truth that they were born to parents incapable of authentic love. To protect themselves from calling their own upbringing into question, most people will cling to destructive opinions, build massive financial fortresses, or entertain wild fantasies of living forever. As Alice Miller wrote in Breaking Down the Walls of Silence: The Liberating Experience of Facing Painful Truth:

The Shared Root: Cults, Tech Lords, and Emotional Prisons
Whether it is a localized group teaching physical immortality or Silicon Valley transhumanists writing algorithms to upload their consciousness into digital servers, the psychological driver is identical: an utter refusal to experience the vulnerability, helplessness, and eventual death of the biological self.
When an unloved or abused child’s core powerlessness is never felt and processed, the adult ego must erect a towering defense mechanism to survive. For some, that defense manifests as radical spiritual delusions of living forever. For the super-wealthy and tech moguls—like Elon Musk and the ultra-rich figures who populate today's financial hierarchies—that defense mechanism is constructed out of billions of dollars, corporate control, and messianic tech ambitions.
I see this dynamic clearly within my own family orbit. My niece—the wealthiest member of our family—operates with the same unyielding drive as those tech titans. She and the many wealthy elites are tirelessly inside their self-constructed emotional prisons. They inhabit lavish financial bubbles, utterly convinced that money, power, and high-tech solutions will insulate them from existential reality. They remain completely blind to the fact that their bubbles are hollow, fragile, and bound to burst.
The Threat to Everyone Else
When a local group falls for an immortality delusion, the emotional fallout remains largely contained to its members and their immediate families. But when the same unexamined childhood defenses drive the billionaires building global artificial intelligence systems, digital infrastructure, and economic frameworks, the scale becomes catastrophic.
Men and women who have never confronted their own internal helplessness are now handed godlike technological leverage. They mistake financial power for personal omnipotence. Rather than facing the painful truth of their own personal histories, they use high-tech abstractions to mask their terror—and they threaten to pull the rest of humanity into their collective nightmare as their illusions crumble.
Most people would rather destroy themselves, exploit others, or burn down the world around them than face the unvarnished facts of their early life. But no amount of capital, code, or ideological denial can silence the body forever. The body never lies. The bubble will always burst, and reality always demands its due.
