52 Ways to Identify a Covert Narcissist

KEY POINTS

  • The covert narcissist fails to develop emotional empathy, self-awareness, or a stable sense of identity and self-esteem in childhood.
  • Covert narcissists avoid the spotlight and prefer passive-aggressive means of controlling others due to their fear being exposed and humiliated.
  • Tactics of a covert narcissist might include belittling, triangulation, and avoiding direct responsibility.

The flamboyance of overt narcissists can make them pretty easy to identify, but what about the covert narcissist in your life?

Recognizing covert personality traits requires looking beyond obvious appearances, past common assumptions and expectations. For this reason, covert narcissism is more difficult to spot, and it can take years to recognize it in someone you think you know well. But the good news is that once you become aware of the patterns and signs of covert narcissism, you aren’t likely to miss them again.

Covert Narcissism Checklist

The more covert form of pathological narcissism and narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is not expressed the same way in every individual, but there are typical patterns that are very common. If you see many or most of these attitudes and behaviors in a person you know, you’re probably dealing with someone who suffers—and makes others suffer—with covert narcissism.

  1. Is passive-aggressive
  2. Criticizes and judges from the sidelines
  3. Is condescending and superior
  4. Is threatened by honesty and directness
  5. Swings between idealizing and devaluing him-/herself and others
  6. Denies and dismisses others’ feelings
  7. Cultivates a public image sharply different from his/her private behavior
  8. Identifies as a victim
  9. Is cynical and sarcastic
  10. Makes unreasonable demands
  11. Turns your problems into his/her dramas
  12. Belittles and blames
  13. Exploits and/or attacks others’ vulnerability
  14. Is reactive to questioning or criticism
  15. Plays on sympathies
  16. Fakes or exaggerates illness/injury for attention.

"Many people have fallen victim to the manipulative behaviors of a covert narcissist without realizing what has happened until they are already in emotional pain. Overt narcissists are so much easier to see coming as they are what you might expect - loud, obnoxious, and arrogant.

It is not unusual for people to find themselves in long-term relationships with covert narcissists only to be hurt by a sense of a lack of partnership or reciprocity in the relationship." DR. MELANIE CABRERA, PSY

NARCISSISTS DESPISE WEAKNESS

The older I get, the less I feel the need to be included, understood or accepted.

"Narcissist v. Sociopath

A Narcissist sees others as a means to validate his existence. The less validating you are, the less use you are to a Narcissist.

A Sociopath views others as entertainment. The less entertaining you are, the less use you are to a Sociopath.

Both the Narcissist and the Sociopath need to dominate and control others. They will both exploit you with no remorse and have no conscience. My advice? Do not validate the Narcissist and do not entertain the Sociopath. Stay clear of them. Once they suck you in, it is hard to get away. Avoid them both at all costs and if they manage to bring you into their den, run like hell." Lisa E. Scott

"IT IS VERY RARE THAT A SURVIVOR OF NARCISSISTIC ABUSE IS NOT LEFT COMPLETELY FINANCIALLY OBLITERATED."

"Dark Truth: Emotion for a narcissist equates to fuel. They want to hear you getting irritated. They want to get you annoyed. They want your voice to rise and see the tears of frustration welling your eyes. When they see this, it makes them feel so powerful."

"Does the narcissist's description of YOU actually make a good description of the narcissist? Welcome to the wonderful world of PROJECTION."

"THEY ARE PREDATORS

They seek out compassionate, trusting good hearted human beings, and then mimic those qualities.

Like parasites, they are their strongest when they have a healthy host.

And then slowly, they use their victims love to destroy them from the inside out.

But unlike parasites, they don't do this for survival.

They do it for fun/entertainment in order to temporarily alleviate the twisted state of living in contempt, envy and boredom."

"Narcissists are not what they pretend to be .... They are what they hide.

"Open minded people don't care to be right, they care to understand. There's never a right or wrong answer. Everything is about understanding."

"The narcissist believes they are the authority that determines reality. To them, your facts are meaningless and your logic offensive."

"Why? Narcissists Do Not Go To Therapy Narcissists spend their lives, repressing the insecure parts of themselves. They are constantly seeking narcissistic supply, to feed that insatiable need to be superior and the best. The false self is powerful, strong and omnipotent. If they decide to go to therapy, in their eyes, they perceive that to be an admittance of weakness, and that there may be something innately wrong with them. There is no way a narcissist is going to allow that to happen. They live their lives, trying to avoid that very thing. They need to believe there is nothing wrong with them, and they are In fact, superior and amazing human beings. It is extremely difficult convincing a narcissist to go to therapy, and if they do end up going, they have been known to be, dishonest and manipulative with the therapist." -Maria Consiglio

"A TOXIC PERSON never changes. They change victims and blame everything on everybody else. They can't see the wrong in their actions, but always find time to find them in yours."

"Relationships with narcissists only last for as long as you're willing to put yourself last."

"A narcissist will do what it takes to maintain control over you.

This intensifies when you leave.

They do this through various ways. They will try and cripple you financially, they will isolate you from any support system they perceive to be a threat. Be prepared and have a plan in place!"

"Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate." CARL JUNG

"Before you attack her, know that she is built for this shit. She's stronger than her demons. She's been played, stabbed, cheated on, taken advantage of and left crying and ribbed on the cold floor. Her name has been dragged through the dirt a number of times, and everytime she picked it up and came out clean. She passed the worst moments of her life alone. You see, she's self made. She's built for war, and pain shaped her the best, you can't destroy a woman like that."

"When you think of the long and gloomy history of man, you will find more hideous crimes have been committed in the name of obedience than have ever been committed in the name of rebellion" -- C.P. Snow.

"They don't lie to you because the truth will hurt your feelings. They lie to you because the truth might provoke you to make choices that won't serve their interest."

"DYING DOESN'T SCARE ME WHAT SCARES ME IS lS LIVING IN AWORLD RUN BY EVIL PEOPLE. WHO CONTROL THE DESTINY OF OUR CHILDREN"

"Narcissists only surround themselves with people who enable their behavior, ignore their behavior or encourage their behavior. Anyone who tries to hold them accountable will be accused and blamed of the exact things the narcissist is guilty of. And the people who know the truth, will remain silent. THE ENLIGHTENED TARGET"

"Narcissists are not sick. They are evil. They are selfish. They are liars. They manipulate you to serve their interests. They do not deserve a second chance, and they will never change.

Sounds harsh? Good! Because the way they will destroy your life is even harsher."

"NARCISSISTS DESPISE WEAKNESS

One day my client came in, angrily proclaiming, "You will never believe what's happening?" "I helped my brother when no one else did. No one else in the family cared, they turned their backs on him. I went with him to all his appt. and everything he needed to try to fix his situation. And no matter how cruel everyone was, I was always there trying to be his strength. Things eventually got better for him. And unfortunately things took a turn for the worst for me. I started to have some difficulty in my life, because of my narcissistic husband. Everything started falling apart. My narcissistic family turned against me as usual. And guess who was the leader of the pact? MY BROTHER! My brother turned against me, no remorse, no obligation to the only person who was there for him. You see my brother is a narcissist too. I had hoped that me being there for him would of maybe influenced a change in him, I could not have been more wrong. I feel so betrayed. I am so sad. I don't deserve this. And I am so angry! What horrible horrible people!"

Narcissistic Individuals don't feel obligated to anyone. They do what is best for them, regardless of who they hurt.

The brother saw his sister in a position of weakness, and had no respect for her. She was depressed and having a really hard time functioning. She started having panic attacks and went to the emergency room a few times. Her brother looked down on her. Narcissists hate weakness. They don't have compassion or empathy for the person suffering. What they have is contempt." Maria Consiglio

"Why did they try to destroy you?

Because the darkness in them recoils from your light.

Their empty heart resents your abundant love, and their strange hunger feeds on the pain they cause.

Your resilience enrages them. Despite doing their worst, they could never break you.

They hate you because they are something monstrous, and you are nothing like them." John Mark Green // Reasons Why

There is no such thing as a "mutual friend" with an abuser. If they're still friends with the abuser, they cannot be your friend. If they are in contact with the abuser, it puts you at risk and you should not be in contact with them.

IS NARCISSIST PERSONALITY DISORDER

Permanent? Yes.
Treatable: No.
Can help? No.
Can it be fixed? No.
Will it always be bad? The abuse will always return.
Can I make it better? No.
What if its ME? It isn't.
What about the good times? The good times are a tool to keep you hooked.

"Some children in a narcissistic household detect how the selfish parent gets his needs met by the other family members. Those children observe how manipulation and using guilt gets the parent what they want. They emulate the narcissistic parent and develop a false self, use aggression and intimidation, and bully the other siblings and other parent in order to get their way. Those children become narcissists themselves."

"Imagine growing up treated as if you're hard to love... later realizing you were the most worthy of them all... finding you've been surrounded by toxic people full of self hate who gained light by by putting out yours. An insight that makes you invincible"

"The only time a child of a narcissist receives any attention is when it is "showtime". When narcissistic mom is presenting herself as "super mom." There are the impeccable photographs of the perfect family. The children stand their with glued on smiles and empty frozen eyes. They are wearing their best clothing and mother has made sure that everyone she knows will have this image of her family."
The Black Butterfly

"NEVER SAY THIS TO A NARCISSIST

"You're lying!"

"You're a narcissist."

"You're wrong!"

"You use people!" "You hurt me!"

Narcissists are built to destroy those who call them out, so don't. Close the book in the relationship instead and move on!"

"NARCISSISTIC ABUSE

I think the only ones who could understand this type of abuse is other people who have gone through it. Because if it didn't happen to me, I would of never accurately understood it. It feels earth shattering when the mask comes off, and they are so cold, so cruel almost gruesome at times. It is so difficult to accept that none of it was real. You feel traumatized, and really shaken up. It's like waking up from a bad dream, to a nightmare. Especially if you dealt with a covert narcissist, who appeared so good and humble, even kind and compassionate, only to find the devil at the other end of the mask. its so difficult getting used to the depth of their cruelty, and their ice cold hearts. The shock does not wear off easily. At least it didn't for me." Maria Consiglio

"THEY HATE YOU
They hate you, they hate you because they need you. Narcissists are very needy people. That's why when you walk away from them, you are completely exhausted. They need your energy. But they resent that. They resent needing you to survive, so they punish you. You can feel the hatred sometimes pouring out their pores. Crazy part is you don't know what you did. What did you do to make them hate you so much? You didn't do anything, they just resent giving you that much power. They never want to admit just how very important you are to them." -Maria Consiglio

"Psychological murder, or pernicious abuse is form of violence. It is one that goes unnoticed. A crime that is enabled by society. It goes unrecognized but it exists.

The perpetrators operate on an extremely covert level.

It happens behind closed doors, without anyone even being aware of who the victim is-the real victim.

There is no trail of evidence and no one has ever been convicted of it yet but the truth is that pernicious abuse is something that can and does have a life-changing or life-ending effect, not just on the victim, but also on a broader spectrum. Pernicious abuse can initiate someone to commit acts of covert psychological murder, unfortunately, unrecognized and virtually unquestioned.

A covert narcissistic abuser has the potential to commit murder without leaving a trace behind, even morphing into a martyr, a victim."

"You know what your problem is? You're smart. Too smart. You over think, because your mind moves at a million miles a minute.. You're sad, because you're not fooled by the world like everyone else. You don't get along with most people, because they just don't look at things the way you do. You think you're dumb, because you're smart enough to know you don't know everything. Your problem is you're too smart. And that's not a problem at all." Unknown

I don't know a single person in this world I would like to switch places with! I have created a little heaven on earth for myself!

"TO THE REBELS This is for ones that see the through the deception and lies. That actively resist tyranny and live a life which is lead by their own intuition and heart. They are owned by no one.

To the brave Women and Men who courageously risk their reputation and relationships to stand up for what they believe in. Although they may be courageous, they are also selfless, intuitive, and conscious. They care. They love. They fight. Not only for their freedom, but for everyone's freedom.
To the rebels of the world. KEEP ROARING!!"

"WHY YOU SHOULDN'T BE JEALOUS OF THE NEW SUPPLY!
THERE IS NO HAPPILY EVER AFTER. EVER. THERE IS NO TRUTH, LOVE, WARMTH. HONESTY. FIDELITY, RESPECT, CONSIDERATION, RECIPROCITY OR GENUINE BOND. THERE IS ONLY FILTH. TOXICITY, CYNICISM, CONTROL, MANIPULATION, CHEATING, TRIANGULATION. PASSIVE AGGRESSION, COMPETITION. INSECURITY AND ENVY. A LANDFILL. THE NARC WILL NEVER BE ANY DIFFERENT TO HOW THEY WERE WITH YOU! WHEN THE MASK SLIPS"

"Pathological narcissists get away with their abuse because those who haven't experienced it cannot wrap their heads around the possibility such cruelty exists. Because the truth sounds insane. That's because it is."

"TIPS FOR DEALING WITH A NARCISSIST

Don't argue with them.

Don't engage with them.

Don't defend yourself.

Be indifferent.

Be grounded.

Be emotionless."

"Sometimes people try to destroy you, precisely because they recognize your power - not because they don't see it, but because they see it and they don't want it to exist."

"MALIGNANT NARCISSISTS DON'T CHOOSE LOSERS. THEY CHOOSE YOU BECAUSE THEY WANT THE QUALITIES THAT YOU HAVE, THE ONES THEY ARE LACKING, THAT THEY WILL NEVER HAVE."

"Narcissistic Individuals Buy Into Their own Masks.
Covert narcissists for example think they are really good people. They buy into their "humble demeanor" There is a delusional aspect to narcissism, there has to be for them to believe they are perfect or superior. They rationalize all the bad things they do. They find a way to blame you, or make it your fault, or believe you deserve it. That is how they could live with themselves. Especially covert narcissists, they can't imagine being looked at as anything
other than wonderful people" -Maria Consiglio

"5 REASONS WHY NARCISSISTS ARE SO DANGEROUS

Narcissists are dangerous because they destroy and corrupt the Victim's self-identity, self-concept, and self-worth. The Victim no more identifies him or herself and takes years to rebuild their personality. Going through narcissistic abuse is the total annihilation of everything a person has ever known. The gaslighting, projection, cognitive dissonance, future-faking, love-bombing, false-promises, eroded boundaries, inability to empathize, and mind-fuckery are all enough to drive one crazy.

Narcissists are true parasites. The only reason they stay with you because they need supply and need to feed on you. They see you as an object.

• Lack of meaningful remorse or guilt-to the point of complete indifference. They leave a trail of destruction wherever they go.

. They take pleasure in their Victim's pain. It gives them a sense of being in power and control. Emotional Abuse"

"Empaths be like:
I don't just listen to your words. I listen to your use of words, your tone, your body movements, your eyes, your subtle facial expressions. I interpret your silences - I can hear everything you don't say in words." - Unknown

"The high narcissists get from hurting an innocent child is a hell of a lot more intense than the one they would get from targeting a world-weary adult. This is why narcissists stalk their own children; that and easy access. Malignant narcissist parents also stalk their children's souls in order to be human extensions-to live vacariously through them. Either way; the malignant narcissist parent gains in the transaction of the child's soul. They drain the child (kill life in the child), and leave them hollow (without a self) so that they can fill the child with themselves: be it as a dumping ground for their own toxic waste, or a vessel to live their narcissistic fantasy through."

"Most normal people have a narcissistic tendency as well as an altruistic one. However, the narcissist is the one end of the scale and the altruist on the other. While the altruist gets a kick out of helping others, the narcissist gets a kick out of hurting others. The altruist wants to raise others to their level and enjoy the familiarity they see with themself in the person, the altruist has helped and shares the happiness. On the other hand, the narcissist wants to drag people down to their level and enjoy the familiarity they see with themself in the person they have hurt and the shared misery." ~Dr. Ludger Hofmann-Engl

"The narcissist's life is a huge lie that is wrapped up with a huge bow to look like it is an amazing gift to all man and womankind! They have to process a great deal to keep their dysfunction at bay and protect themselves from exposure always having to look over their shoulder because in time life WILL finally catch up with them and expose them with the truth of what they REALLY are. If they can get away once more they will try, they are very adept at escaping exposure and accountability with more lies. But age will also slow them down as well as KARMA and there will be nobody there for them to abuse for supply and that will destroy them. Let them meet their own future AND destiny."

EVERYTHING YOU SEE ON TV IS A SCRIPTED PERFORMANCE WITH THE PURPOSE OF SHAPING YOUR WORLD VIEW TO BENEFIT THE POWERFUL INTERESTS RUNNING THE SHOW.

"What kind of narcissist is the most dangerous?

A covert narcissist is the worst kind of narcissist there is. Like a stealth bomb, you can't see them coming until they have left their destruction.

Covert narcissism is one of the most extreme and damaging forms of narcissism that you can encounter. The thing that sets these narcissists apart is their highly defensive nature and being emotionally vulnerable, seemingly without any exterior trace of the planning and plotting in which they engage. Unlike other forms, the covert narcissist is like a stealth bomb-they come without any warning and destroy everything in their wake."

5 Forms of Narcissistic Abuse Used by Covert Narcissists

"Accept that the narcissist is what he/she is. Narcissists are totally incapable of love and deep connection. Nothing you did or didn't do would have changed the outcome. You were not loved for YOU as a person. You were viewed as an object and loved for your utility, not for your individuality. You were used for the perks you were able to provide. You were their human helium tank that maintained their inflated view of themselves. I know it sounds harsh, and it's a very painful realization to accept. But the acceptance of this fact is also the very thing that will accelerate your healing and set you free." DR. MELANIE CABRERA, PSY

5 Forms of Narcissistic Abuse Used by Covert Narcissists is another great article by DR. MELANIE CABRERA, PSY

In this article Dr. Melanie Cabrera articulates beautifully exactly what, very recently, two covert narcissists did, one in my family and the other in the workplace, they invaded my privacy and one even broke into private messages accounts of close relatives and made public private conversations. When thier moves didn't go their way, they just quit and left.

"As you’ll notice, their behaviors have nothing to do with you and everything to do with their attempts to regain or retain a stable self image.

Covert, or vulnerable, narcissists differ from their overt (grandiose) counterparts in several ways.  One of the main ways is that, contrary to pop psychology belief, overt narcissists do not have an underlying belief of themselves as inadequate or less than.  They truly believe the world should fall at their feet.  Covert narcissists, on the other hand, have a fragile ego in which shame and envy drive the narcissistic abuse bus.  They absolutely NEED to objectify others and destroy intersubjectivity in their relationships as a way to “prove” to themselves they are not the inadequate beings they feel they are.  In short, they view their inner self as shameful but lack the intrinsic motivation to change.  When combined with deficits in emotional recognition (empathy), deficits in affect regulation, and a biased conceptualization of self and others, you get a covert narcissist.

In this article, we’ll take a look at five examples of narcissistic abuse used by covert narcissists and what they really mean.  As you’ll notice, their behaviors have nothing to do with you and everything to do with their attempts to regain or retain a stable self image.

  1. Having your social media, emails, phone calls and texts combed through regularly.

This invasion of privacy serves two distinct aspects of the narcissist’s psyche.  First, this narcissistic abuse relates to testing your boundaries when done early on in the relationship.  To him or her, you have no true privacy as you are something to be “owned” and used to maintain his or her sense of self.  For the covert narcissist, however, this boundary violation morphs into a need to ensure continued hold over you.  He or she needs to make sure you are not speaking ill or otherwise catching on to the game being played. If he or she does not find anything, this maintains the sense of self as adequate and desirable. However, any indication that you are not all about him or her (in a positive light) will lead to an argument, including talking to members of the opposite sex.  Although it may appear that he or she is just starting a fight for the sake of starting a fight, in actuality, the fight is way to preserve the sense of self – his or her perspective is that you should not be talking or gaining attention from

  1. Being unable to leave or enter a room, being locked out

This tactic is typically used just before discard and it is purely an attempt to regain a sense of stable self for the narcissist.  If this form of narcissistic abuse is being used, it is because you have begun to question him or her, have caught on to other incidences of abuse, or are otherwise indicating you are fed up with their behavior.  You perhaps set a boundary.  My narcissistic ex used to lock me out of the bedroom or lock my dog in one room while I was locked in another when I would confront him on his crappy behaviors (usually involving invading my privacy).  They do this in hopes that you will become erratic, yell, beg, plead, etc so that they can use it against you during their smear campaign and ensuing “woe is me” attempts at victimhood."

Covert Narcissist

The Security business attracts a lot of these covert and overt narcissists, assholes.
I like to work until I'm 67 but I'm so tired and burned out of dealing with these type of bullies in the workplace that I think next year, if not sooner, I will leave the workplace for good...  read more about my experience with malignant covert narcissists in the link below:

"Many people have fallen victim to the manipulative behaviors of a covert narcissist without realizing what has happened until they are already in emotional pain. Overt narcissists are so much easier to see coming as they are what you might expect - loud, obnoxious and arrogant.

Hoovering a Technique of Emotional Abuse

Unresolved childhood traumas combined with present traumatic experiences are a recipe for tragedy. This is the root cause of most of the tragedies we witness in our world.

Good people are A MAGNET TO THE NARCISSIST. If you are a sensitive, kind individual, especially one possessing a high ability for empathy, NARCISSTISTS WILL BE CIRCLING. Be aware of it. Learn to see the red flags. THEY'RE ALWAYS THERE.

MALIGNANT NARCISSISTS DON'T CHOOSE LOSERS. THEY CHOOSE YOU BECAUSE THEY WANT THE QUALITIES THAT YOU HAVE, THE ONES THEY ARE LACKING, THAT THEY WILL NEVER HAVE

Keep Their Façade Intact

Narcissists often have a carefully constructed persona they present to the world. Hoovering is a way for the narcissist to prevent you from sharing their experiences with others and exposing their true nature.

Additionally, they might use hoovering tactics on your friends and family [or coworkers] to maintain a façade. Other people will have a hard time believing your accounts of their abusive and manipulative behavior because they “seem so nice” and “wouldn’t hurt a fly.”

Narcissists are not what they pretend to be. They are what they hide.

Please don't make the fatal mistake of believing you can "fix" a malignant narcissist by loving them more, by not doing what triggers them off.....they don't want to be fixed because they like what they are. They want to destroy you, feed off you, deplete you, and exhaust you!

If you're lucky enough to get away and leave a narcissist, you will probably find they act as though you've caused them severe injury. In their delusional head, they will be thinking, how dare you leave me, when I'm not done controlling, using, or abusing you. And because their ego will be damaged by the loss of their supply, be prepared to be slandered by lies and stories about you. They will share these fabricated stories and lies, to anyone who will listen, so they can be sure that they look like the victim. Don't let them get to you, hold your head up high and remember it doesn't matter what other people believe, because you were there, living the nightmare, so you know the truth.

The truth is, narcissistic parents don't have children because they want to nurture and guide their offspring through life; they have children so that they have an automatic, built-in relationship in which they have power, one in which the narcissist can write the rules without any checks and balances.

YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT SOME PEOPLE NEVER REALLY GROW. THEY NEVER LEARN THEIR LESSON. THEY NEVER RECOGNIZE THEIR MISTAKES. THEY NEVER ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR FAULTS. THEY NEVER ADMIT THEY WERE IN THE WRONG. YOU WILL NEVER RECEIVE AN APOLOGY FROM THEM, AND YOU WILL NEVER SEE THEIR BEHAVIOR CHANGE.

10 THINGS THAT DRIVE A NARCISSIST CRAZY!

• Not getting enough narcissistic supply

• People not believing they are an authority

• Your happiness

• Being ignored

• Having boundaries and limits imposed on them

• Being questioned

• Your successes

• When you refuse to be taken in by their charm/love bombing

• When you let go, rebuild your life, and begin to THRIVE

Some signs of hoovering include:
  • Manipulation: The narcissist manipulates the victim back into the relationship against their will
  • Twisting the conversation: The narcissist twists the conversation
  • Declaration of love: The narcissist declares love
  • Repentance: The narcissist apologizes, but the apology is qualifiers that show the narcissist still holds the victim responsible for their behavior
  • Threatening to harm themselves: The narcissist threatens to harm themselves
  • Using others: The narcissist tries to get other people to reach out to the victim on their behalf
  • Excessive gifts: The narcissist sends the victim lavish or expensive gifts
  • Overpromising: The narcissist promises to take the victim on an exotic vacation, buy their dream house, or even marry them
  • False crises: The narcissist makes up some crisis or emergency, such as a health scare
Hoovering can cause the victim to lose confidence and start to question their self-worth. Eventually, the victim may recognize how toxic the relationship is and want out. This is the stage where hoovering typically comes in.

Here are some tips for overcoming hoovering:

If you mention their past behavior, let the gaslighting begin
Test the narcissist by expressing your valid reservations
Watch how quickly the narcissist turns on you

Hoovering is a manipulation tactic used to “suck” victims back into toxic relationship cycles.
Someone who hoovers fears that their target will “get away” from them, so they may engage in love bombing, feigning crises, stalking, or smear campaigns in order to suck up all their target's time, energy, and attention.

"One of the most difficult things about being abused by a Malignant Narcissist is coming to terms with the fact that the person never really loved you or even cared about you at all.

Even though this is difficult, it is something you must face courageously, as thinking that they have real feelings will only lead you into a trap.

It is only when you face the truth that you can get out of the trap, no matter how hard the truth is to accept. When you're in love with a Malignant Narcissist, you are not in love with a real person; you're in love with the illusion that the Narcissist created for you.

The Narcissist puts on a front and acts like everything you want and need them to be until-
SURPRISE!!!
The Narcissist gets you where he or she wants you, then changes into a completely different person... cold, dismissive, hateful, mean, deceitful and unlovings It is quite shocking. It knocks you off balance. This is precisely what the Narcissist wants.
Jenna Ryan (Self Love U)

 What does Hoovering Look Like?

Hoovering is similar to love bombing in that the person hoovering is attempting to exploit their victim’s vulnerabilities.

Narcissists are often skilled at knowing exactly what a person wants; they will aim to make their target feel special, loved, and valued to lure them back into the relationship or to re-establish control."

Unlike love-bombing, which tends to occur at the beginning of a relationship, hoovering happens after the devaluation or discard phase.

It is the narcissist’s way of getting back the attention, admiration, and control they feel they are losing. It typically occurs after the victim has attempted to distance themselves or end the relationship.

TIPS FOR DEALING WITH A NARCISSIST

Don't argue with them.

Don't engage with them.

Don't defend yourself.

Be indifferent.

Be grounded.

Be emotionless.

The smarter you become about narcissistic abuse, the crazier the narcissist will say you are.

The narcissist believes they are the authority that determines reality.

To them, your facts are meaningless, and your logic offensive.

Sometimes people try to destroy you, precisely because they recognize your power - not because they don't see it, but because they see it and they don't want it to exist.

Especially covert narcissists, they can't imagine being looked at as anything other than wonderful people. -Maria Consiglio

A number one way narcissists control you is they teach you to doubt yourself. They gaslight you and literally trick you into thinking what you saw you didn't see, what you heard never happened, and what you're experiencing is an illusion, and not real. They do this so much that after a while you really start to doubt yourself. That is why your whole relationship feels like a perpetual state of confusion. That is exactly where they want you. They can't control a person who is strong in their conviction, so they keep you doubting yourself. It is a horrible and cruel way to not only control a person but to keep a person perpetually off balance and in a weakened state of mind.

A kind person will sense your fears and soothe them. A cruel person will target your fears and FEED them. Rose Gardner

Narcissists are not what they pretend to be. They are what they hide.

Dark Truth:
Emotion for a narcissist equates to fuel. They want to hear you getting irritated. They want to get you annoyed. They want your voice to rise and see the tears of frustration welling your eyes. When they see this, it makes them feel so powerful.

THEY ARE PREDATORS
They seek out compassionate, trusting good-hearted human beings, and then mimic those qualities. Like parasites, they are their strongest when they have a healthy host. And then slowly, they use their victim's love to destroy them from the inside out. But unlike parasites, they don't do this for survival. They do it for fun/entertainment in order to temporarily alleviate the twisted state of living in contempt, envy, and boredom.

The high narcissists get from hurting an innocent child is a hell of a lot more intense than the one they would get from targeting a world-weary adult. This is why narcissists stalk their own children; that and easy access. Malignant narcissistic parents also stalk their children's souls in order to be human extensions-to live vicariously through them. Either way; the malignant narcissist parent gains in the transaction of the child's soul. They drain the child (kill life in the child), and leave them hollow (without a self) so that they can fill the child with themselves: be it as a dumping ground for their own toxic waste; or a vessel to live their narcissistic fantasy through.

Narcissist v.

Avoid them both at all costs and if they manage to bring you into their den, run like hell. Lisa E. Scott

What is Stonewalling?

• Dismissing your concerns or refusing to discuss an issue

• Dismissing your ideas and perspectives like they are invalid, stupid, unreasonable or boring

• Avoiding discussing or problem solving issues

• Busying themselves while you're trying to talk to them

• Avoiding eye contact, staring past you, or at their phone, watch or TV

• Acts as if you're unimportant and have nothing of value to say

• Ignoring you when you speak

• Eye rolling

Fortunately, some are born with spiritual immune systems that sooner or later give rejection to the illusory worldview grafted upon them from birth through social conditioning. They begin sensing that something is amiss, and start looking for answers. Inner knowledge and anomalous outer experiences show them a side of reality others are oblivious to, and so begins their journey of awakening. Each step of the journey is made by following the heart instead of following the crowd and by choosing knowledge over the veils of ignorance.
Henri Bergson
Depression is caused by the repressed emotions of the child you once were. And all addiction is a form of escapism... find the courage to face and resolve your childhood repression and you know true freedom that cannot be bought with money and cannot ever be stolen.
Evil vs Broken
Do not confuse a broken person for an evil person. A broken person can be fixed an evil person cannot. An evil person causes pain, they hurt others. They deliberately cause chaos. A broken person would never do any of those things because they know how it feels to be on the other side of those actions. Don't confuse someone who can be saved with someone that you will need to be saved from.
Empaths be like:
I don't just listen to your words. I listen to your use of words, your tone, your body movements, your eyes, your subtle facial expressions. I interpret your silences - I can hear everything you don't say in words. Unknown
Does the narcissist's description of YOU actually make a good description of the narcissist?
Welcome to the wonderful world of PROJECTION.
When conflict arises, we are able to let it go and move on. Narcissists must get revenge.
We trust in the good of all people. Narcissists believe everyone is just like them.
We like to help people feel good about themselves and feel relief when a conflict has been resolved. Narcissists like to fight.
We take responsibility when we've made a mistake. Narcissists blame everyone else. We enjoy being compassionate. Narcissists enjoy being manipulative.
Handle every situation like a dog. If you can't eat it or play with it, just pee on it and walk away. :-)
Accept that the narcissist is what
he/she is. Narcissists are totally incapable
of love and deep connection. Nothing
you did or didn't do would have changed
the outcome. You were not loved for YOU as a person. You were viewed as an object and loved for your utility, not for your individuality. You were used for the perks you were able to provide. You were their human helium tank that maintained their inflated view of themselves. I know it sounds harsh, and it's a very painful realization to accept. But the acceptance of this fact is also the very thing that will accelerate your healing and set you free
"You are wasting your time if you are trying to reason with a narcissist. They will twist everything you say. They are not trying to understand you. They are trying to keep power over you."- Maria Consiglio

THE NEW TARGET ISN'T THE LOVE OF THEIR LIFE. THEY ARE THE NEW SUPPLY. A NARCISSIST DOESN'T LOVE ANYONE. NOT YOU. NOT THE NEXT PERSON. NOT THE ONE BEFORE

A Narcissist can't allow others to see who AND what they really are - an empty dark, angry, repulsive, dangerous person who loathes life and people, as well as lacking ALL empathy, and morals, and is abusive. So, the Narcissist creates a highly likable, moral, good, and normal MASK/image that will procure them adulation, affirmation, and attention. Everything the Narcissist requires to survive and walk among the 'real' or 'normal' people. WHY, because they need the basic things that only 'functioning' human beings can provide BUT they can't, so they morph into one of us so they can 'harvest' what they need from people.

IDENTIFYING TOXIC PEOPLE
They are controlling. They have to have everything their way. And the only agenda they care about is their own. They don't take, "no" for an answer, unless they are manipulating you, or it will ultimately suit their purpose.

They are never wrong!- Even with evidence to the contrary, they will never admit to being wrong. And don't expect an apology from them. Their enormous ego would never even entertain that possibility.

They are draining. You feel depleted every time you are in their presence. Extremely selfish people are like vampires, they suck the life force right out of you.

They are deceptive- They sometimes come in the guise of being helpful and caring. They may even be helpful. But don't be fooled it always comes at a cost. Or they get some narcissistic pleasure from it. They love having their egos stoked, and being told, what great people they are. Meanwhile, if you do one thing they don't like they will bury you in an instant, without even a second thought.

They are liars They are the most deceptive people you will ever meet. Everything they do, everything they are is set up to deceive and fulfill their purpose.

"They are delusional They really believe their own lies. They even think they are great people. They have this innate ability to fool everyone including themselves." Maria Consiglio

Pay attention when people react with anger and hostility to your boundaries. You have found the edge where their respect for you ends.

"Stop trying every which way to let a Narcissist know how you feel. The truth is they don't care how you feel. They are not interested in your feelings or how something affected you. They are only interested in getting their own feelings validated and getting their own needs met. Stop thinking they don't understand, they understand. They are just not interested. Your needs are not even a thought in their mind. A Narcissist's mind is not wired the same way. Their initial reaction is always me first, then me again and again." -Maria Consiglio

Malignant narcissism is a runaway freight train ride from childhood on, a vicious cycle of bad behavior that soon passes a point of no return - when you do something so evil that you'll never be able to get real and face your true self in a mirror. The things you do to trample others ("glorify" yourself) this way are abhorrent. People would abhor you if they knew. Indeed, you would abhor yourself if you faced facts about what you have become. So, don't expect an adult narcissist to change. It ain't gonna happen.

FUNNY HOW THE PEOPLE WHO DESPERATELY WANT TO CHANGE YOU ARE THE LEAST LIKELY TO CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT THEMSELVES.

A NARCISSIST WILL NEVER BE WILLING TO CHANGE. THEY BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE PERFECT AND THAT IT'S THE WORLD AROUND THEM THAT MUST CATER TO THEM.

VULTURES
Beware of opportunistic people who suddenly appear when your life is falling apart. Disguised as good samaritans, they eagerly offer advice and assistance. In reality, they are there to pick the meat off your bones.

"The further society moves away from the truth, the more it hates those who reveal it." George Orwell

SOCIETY HAS BECOME SO FAKE THAT THE TRUTH ACTUALLY BOTHERS PEOPLE.

"THE TRUTH ABOUT OUR CHILDHOOD IS STORED UP IN OUR BODY, AND ALTHOUGH WE CAN REPRESS IT, WE CAN NEVER ALTER IT. OUR INTELLECT CAN BE DECEIVED, OUR FEELINGS MANIPULATED, AND CONCEPTIONS CONFUSED, AND OUR BODY TRICKED WITH MEDICATION. BUT SOMEDAY OUR BODY WILL PRESENT ITS BILL, FOR IT IS AS INCORRUPTIBLE AS A CHILD, WHO, STILL WHOLE IN SPIRIT, WILL ACCEPT NO COMPROMISES OR EXCUSES, AND IT WILL NOT STOP TORMENTING US UNTIL WE STOP EVADING THE TRUTH!" - ALICE MILLER

If we do not work on all three levels body, feeling, mind -- the symptoms of our distress will keep returning, as the body goes on repeating the story stored in its cells until it is finally listened to and understood. -- Alice Miller

Emotional access to the truth is the indispensable precondition of healing. Alice Miller

We don't yet know, above all, what the world might be like if children were to grow up without being subjected to humiliation if parents would respect them and take them seriously as people. Alice Miller

Want to meet someone who has seen evil in human form and actually became stronger through the experience? Want to talk to someone who has wisdom beyond their years? Want to see what inner resiliency looks like in a person? Spend some time with a survivor of narcissistic, sociopathic, and psychopathic abuse. They are some of the most sparkly gems I have ever known. Shannon Thomas
